Designed to enhance rather than replace a quality arts education, the PTA^®Reflections Program^SM provides opportunities for students to express themselves and to receive positive recognition for their artistic efforts.

2011-2012 Reflections Program Theme: "Diversity Means..."
PTA believes all children deserve a quality arts education and encourages students to pursue artistic expression through participation in its annual arts Reflections Program. The program offers students the opportunity to create works of art for fun and recognition. Students in preschool through grade 12 are encouraged to create and submit works of art in six areas: dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography, and the visual arts (which includes art forms such as drawing, painting, print making, and collage). For more than 40 years, the program has encouraged millions of students across the nation and in American schools overseas to create works of art. The Reflections Program was started in 1969 by then Colorado PTA President Mary Lou Anderson.
Students participate in the Reflections Program by submitting entries to their local PTA or PTSA. Any PTA/PTSA in good standing is eligible to sponsor a Reflections Program.

Monday August 1st is Freshman Orientation.

Classes begin for all other students on Tuesday, August 2nd - regular hours.

New bylaws for the Kapaa High School PTSA have been submitted to the Hawaii State PTSA.
The review of bylaws helps to strengthen the operations and proper functioning of the unit in order to support the ongoing efforts to advocate for children and promote parent involvement at Kapaa High School.

Aloha Friends,
2010 Project Grad was a hit!!! Thanks to all the volunteers and community members, your generous time and effort made it successful. We all couldn’t have done it without you. We would like to personally thank you all for your unconditional support!!! It was all of you that made it possible! Your patience and understanding was very much appreciated.

Special thanks to the decorating committee, decorators and those parents that stood alive for the entire night. It was tough keeping the eye lids open, lol - not to mention the work out on the body, but we DID IT!!!!

The 2010 Class was addressed as the BEST CLASS and I do have to agree! The graduates were very behaved but most impressively, they hold high respect for each other and others. I am very delighted with their gracious appreciation for all that was done for them. They all had a blast and continue to share their stories with their families, friends and community about their Project Graduation celebration.

This event could not have been possible without the support from you! We are still flabbergasted and grateful for the support and generous donations that poured into the event. Every moment shared in preparing for the event was well worth it for the reason that we met our goal and the mission was accomplished.

Please feel free to reply back with your feelings about the event. Your feedback will allow us to review things and it will give a chance to make things better. We would like to also ask you to share your experiences with others in hope that they will see the gratifying and thrill in preparing for a wonderful event. We are in the process of planning next year’s event and you are always welcome to join us. Hope to see you in the future events and please don’t be a stranger. Like the 2010 class says, “It’s A Wrap” …

Again, "thank you --- thank you-- thank you ---" for all that you have done!!! There are no words to express the gratitude to all that took part in the event!!!!!

A few parents are needed to help on Saturday Morning 6:00 am at the Kapaa High School Gym with Mrs. Keawe. You will need to assist with the deboarding of students from the buses, making sure they get their personal items, buses are cleared of all rubbish, left/forgotten items on the buses...

...and most of all that a designated adult picks them up at the gym. NO PROJECT GRAD ATTENDEE IS ALLOWED TO DRIVE AWAY FROM GYM IN A VEHICLE!!!

Friday, May 21, 2010, Kapa'a New Park Stadium

7:00 a.m. - until pau

***An extra ticket for the graduation ceremony will be given to volunteers who stay 7:00am until the end of set up.

Here's What We're Doing:

Setting up chairs and barricades
Putting up alphabet signs,
Decorating stage and entrances
Cleaning up stage (same night after ceremony)
Final clean up Saturday @ 9-10 am

Here's What We Need:

Old rags and buckets to wipe chairs clean
Tropical flowers and greenery
White, sturdy plumerias (with little bit yellow in middle, loose)
Long Ti leaf and crown flower leis for stage decorations
Banana Stumps, green ti leaves
Sledge Hammers to pound in stakes for barricades
Rakes, clippers, scissors, machetes, ladders, rope and
string for the finishing touches!
*** Duct tape and zip ties will be provided.***

4th Quarter Sponsorships & News

All Staff Appreciation Lunch: Our annual All Staff Appreciation Lunch under the direction of PTSA and SCC member Robert Perdue was a smash if we don’t say so ourselves. The lunch coincided with Senior Project Presentation Day, and there were dozens of community members on campus for the day. A big Mahalo to Aunty Debbie and the Cafeteria team for their support and assistance; and to the student and parent volunteers who came out to help with prep, set-up, serving and clean-up.

Project Grad: Of course, at this point in the year, the buzz here at the PTSA is Project Grad, Project Grad, Project Grad! Our Project Grad Committee is in overdrive. There has been good turn-out of volunteers so far. Felina Silva is putting the final touches on the volunteer schedules, set-up for Project Grad will have all hands on deck starting Thursday before Commencement, so it will be full steam ahead. We hope Project Grad will be a stellar celebration, and a lasting and cherished memory for all.

In closing, once again, we would like to acknowledge all our members, our eScrip supporters, and our active volunteers. The collective contributions, support and efforts we make matters. It makes a difference for the young men and women, the coaches, the faculty and administration of Kapaa High.

Best wishes to all the graduating seniors, and for the rest of us, you’ll be hearing from us soon. Have a save, wonderful summer!

Spring is here, the Plumeria will soon be in full bloom providing us with all the flowers for May Day and Graduation Lei. With Spring Break behind us, all eyes are on the 9th, 10th, 11th and especially the 12th graders. Seniors need to pace themselves as the complete their academics, prepare for their Senior Project Presentations, and start Graduation Ceremony practices. Flurries of scholarship applications, transcript requests will soon end, and final business with their counselors' is being conducted.

We are getting ready for the Annual All Staff Appreciation Lunch and the well-oil gears of Project Grad on full steam ahead. The All Staff Appreciation Lunch coincides with Senior Project Presentation Day - April 20th. Volunteers can show up to the Monday April 19th PTSA meeting at the Cafeteria. We will all be pitching in on the lunch prep and having our April monthly meeting.

Spring Sports have just gone into game season. We are psyched about the new Softball Stadium for Kapaa HS Campus and look forward to wonderful home games. Good luck to all the Warrior athletes. Congratulations to the SEVEN Warrior Teams who cinched KIF Titles this Year- SO FAR!!! (That's 7 out of 9 Titles)

3rd Quarter Sponsorships Events, Milestones

Aloha Everyone! The Q3 Mid-quarter mark has passed, and in the first rushed weeks of the year we continued our support of several worthwhile causes. First was our annnual financial assistance and participation in the EKDPET Family Summit. The East Kauai Drug Prevention Education Team produces and stages Family Summit here on Kapaa High School campus with the support of Principal Gilmore Youn, help from student clubs, the Parent Community Network Center and countless numbers of volunteers. Our very own Project Grad Committee was there among more than 50 other family strengenthing, non-profit organizations spreading the word about the PTSA and PG2010.

We also provided financial support to Project Grad for their Valentine's Spaghetti Fundraiser which helped cover basic production costs for the event.

The Kapaa High School Boys Varsity Coach, Kevin Cram, paid us a welcomed visit to request a donation to help defray travel expenses for the team's return to the Division II State Championships in Oahu. We were glad to oblige and are thankful to all our members and eScrip subscribers for their continued support which makes these ongoing sponshorships possible.

Congratulations to the FIVE Warrior Teams who cinched KIF Titles this Year- SO FAR!!!

2nd Semester Highlights

Here are a few second semester highlights: The SCC Community Meeting and BBQ the first week back (mentioned above), The Annual District Science Fair hosted by the Math and Science Departments in January, Family Summit in February, and Teacher Appreciation Day on April 20th, which coincides with Senior Project Presentations. Also, nominations/reccommendations for vacancies on the PTSA and the SCC will accepted. For more on the SCC, elections please visit the our SCC page.

First semester is well on it's way and the development of furloughs and a school year that will end earlier than usual (Last day of school is May 26) are making May feel like it's coming that much faster. There is more than a lot to do between now and then, and so, guess we all just have to keep focused and keep at it.

Recent PTSA sponsorships include financial support for the freshman anti-drug assembly hosted by the Significant Adult program which featured Malia Tokioka ofHome Help & Healing Kauai, a faith based substance treatment program. The assembly was coordinated by Doris Morikoka-Fulks and Harriet Watanabe, Student Activity Coordinator, with help from the Parent Community Network Center.

We're proud to provide financial support for The Tradewind Newspaper. The archives for The Tradewind date back to 1944 making this year's run the 65th volume. This year's Faculty Advisor for The Tradewind is Ms. Beth Sette, Language Arts, who is new to Kapaa HS. Welcome and kudos to Ms. Sette!

Winter sports are gearing up and we wish all the teams the very best. We hope some teams will be coming to us soon looking for that "PTSA help" we often provide... money needed to go off-island to compete at tournaments and championships. Have Fun and Train Hard. Spread the Warrior Pride!

1st Quarter Sponsorships

We proudly co-sponsored the Senior Project T-Shirt Design Competition with The Kapaa Alumni Foundation. The Foundation's generous $700 donation toward the cost of the t-shirts was instrumental. This year the T-Shirts were produced by students in CTE classes. Senior Project is a required for graduation and counts towards a half credit.

Students are enjoying Five New Picnic Tables on Campus thanks to Kapaa HS student, Eagle Scout Stephen Greenleaf. The PTSA awarded seven hundred dollars towards materials for the project. Mahalo and congratulations to Mr. Greenleaf for his example of excellence in community service and leadership.
